NCERT Revises Class 11, 12 Political Science Textbooks 2026

The National Council of Educational Research and Training has reconstituted a 20-member team to develop new Political Science textbooks and teaching material for Classes 11 and 12. The NCERT Political Science textbook revision is part of the wider implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The NCERT Class 11 Political Science textbook has been given a target completion date of November 30, 2026, while the NCERT Class 12 Political Science textbook is scheduled to be completed by July 30, 2027. The timelines are significant as NCERT continues the phased introduction of textbooks developed under the revised national curriculum.

Who Is Part of the New NCERT Political Science Textbook Team?

The reconstituted Textbook Development Team includes academics, schoolteachers and NCERT faculty members from institutions across the country.

Political analyst and academic Sandeep Shastri, Vice-President at Nitte (Deemed to be University), will lead the 20-member team. The panel includes representatives from Jawaharlal Nehru University, National Law University Delhi, Delhi University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Utkal University, Pondicherry University and other institutions.

The new panel replaces the earlier textbook development team notified in June 2025. The reconstitution was notified on August 14, 2026.
Members will contribute to areas including writing, review, illustrations, language editing and links between topics.

What Will Change in the New Political Science Textbooks?

The NCERT textbook changes are being developed in accordance with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, rather than being limited to minor updates to the existing books.

The new material is expected to incorporate cross-cutting themes such as:

  • Indian Knowledge Systems
  • Cultural rootedness
  • Equity and inclusion
  • Age-appropriate pedagogy
  • Value education
  • Environmental education
  • Information and communication technology

NCERT's curricular framework for social sciences also provides for teaching and learning material for Political Science, History, Geography and Psychology at the Class 11 and 12 levels.

Draft chapters will go through multiple levels of review before publication. The Textbook Core Group and other relevant NCERT committees will examine the material before NCERT gives final approval for publication and distribution.

When Will the New NCERT Political Science Books Be Available?

Students should distinguish between the textbook development deadline and the date on which a revised book becomes part of classroom teaching.

The new NCERT textbooks 2026 programme is being rolled out in stages. The Class 11 Political Science book is scheduled to be completed by November 30, 2026. The Class 12 book has a later deadline of July 30, 2027.

NCERT has separately indicated that revised textbooks for Classes 10 and 11 will be introduced from the 2027-28 academic session. Existing textbooks for these classes will continue to be used during 2026-27.

This means Class 11 students in the current academic session should continue using the textbooks prescribed by their schools until the revised books are formally introduced.

NCERT Textbook Revision Continues Across Classes

The Political Science update forms part of NCERT's broader curriculum transition.

Revised textbooks aligned with NCF-SE 2023 have already been developed for Grades 1 to 8, while books for higher classes are being introduced progressively.

For senior-secondary Political Science, the reconstituted team now has specific deadlines to move the process from curriculum planning to textbook development.

Students, teachers and schools should therefore watch for subsequent NCERT announcements on publication, availability and the academic session from which the revised NCERT Political Science books will formally be prescribed.
